Abstract

The first commercially available Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system was installed over 25 years ago. Today there are well over 100 different systems available; however, many of these solutions share common modules. This paper will identify the different ANPR technologies available and describe some of the recent Australian applications in the field of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS). ANPR system components covered will include: cameras, illuminators, processors, ANPR engine, application software, cabling and communications. The differences in requirements for mobile and fixed implementations will be discussed. The ITS applications of ANPR fall into one of three categories: access control, traffic monitoring and enforcement.Traffic monitoring applications covered will include: origin-destination studies, unregistered vehicle surveys and journey time monitoring. Enforcement applications covered will include: toll evasion, bus lane, Weigh-In-Motion (WIM), speed, red light, unregistered and stolen vehicle.
