Abstract

ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The conflict between road restraint systems and motorcycle riders involved in an accident still exists. Statistically this assumes a subordinate role in the totality of all accidents. Nevertheless it is necessary for the public administration to deal with this problem, because accidents of this type are frequently combined with high accident severity. A number of measures are available for improving the steel road restraint systems in terms of motorcycle protection. Within the scope of a research project initiated by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Construction and Housing, entitled "Collision Tests with Motorcycles Against Passive Road Restraint Systems", a new system was developed based on already existing construction parts. This system, which has already been tested, appears to very promising for the future, because it offers better protection for sliding motorcycle riders as well as upright riders when they make impact with the rail. Considerable financial funds are required for implementation of the new system. For this reason it is all the more important to use the funds available as effectively as possible. There are two starting points for this. First a research project entitled "Road Restraint Systems Along the Side of the Road at Critical Points for Motorcycle Drivers" has just been awarded for the purpose of determining characteristics of road sections posing a particular hazard for motorcycle drivers. This is intended to provide the road construction administrations with an instrument for recognizing and eliminating hazard potentials on a preventative basis. Secondly research is being accomplished in another research project, "Development and Testing of Requirements for Road Restraint Systems for Improving the Safety for Motorcycle Riders", to find possibilities of converting and/or supplementing existing systems to achieve a high safety level for motorcycle riders.
