Abstract

The first impact tests on the 'Standardschutzeinrichtungen' in Germany were carried out in the early 1990s on the basis of draft of the European standard [DIN EN 1317]. However, some systems according to the former regulations for safety barriers [RPS 1989] were not subjected to impact tests and were nevertheless used as special solutions on German federal highways in accordance with the [RPS 1989] and also after the introduction of [RPS 2009]. In addition to these systems consisting of „standard parts“, retrofit solutions for existing systems that had shown weaknesses in practice were also developed and investigated within the scope of this project. Various retrofit solutions have been developed for problems from experience encountered with detached, especially for safety barriers in central reserve crossings and on bridges. The existing two predetermined breaking points of the posts (at the beam and at the fixation) were defused with an additional screw. Impact tests were carried out on this solution and as a result, retrofit solutions are available for some of the systems (EDSP 2.0 with tubular sleeves and secured plug-in posts, DDSP 4.0+ with tubular sleeves and secured plug-in posts and EDSP 1.33 BW+ with railing and additional screw). For in-situ concrete safety barriers with damaged (corroded) reinforcement and for the transition in accordance with the [ARS 17/1996] for connecting concrete safety barriers with standard steel safety barriers, a rehabilitation solution was developed in each case with which the expected containment levels of the systems can be restored, among other things. For selected cases where no tested safety barriers have been available in practice so far, solutions from the 'Standardschutzeinrichtungen' of the [TLSP 99] were also developed and their performance tested in positive impact tests. This means that various short safety barriers are now available for roads and bridges (20m-kurzESP 2.0, 32mkurzESP 2.0, 12m-kurzESP 2.0 BW), especially for the use on rural roads. Further impact tests were carried out on a standard -terminal extended to 16 m (original length 12 m) and a transition for connecting two standard steel safety barriers. The test reports and videos for the impact tests are published on https://www.bast.de/. (Author/publisher)
