Abstract

Although the traffic control system on the Guadalajara (NII), Madrid (M-40 East) and Ocana (n-IV) corridor is still at the development stage, it is providing useful information on how to manage this major road in the Spanish capital's industrial belt. The communications network installed in the Artificial Vision Stations (AVSs) provides real time traffic data and slow motion video images of the road. The data obtained are automatically incorporated into the databases at Madrid's Centro de Gestion de Trafico (centre for traffic management). The AVSs can be equipped with an automatic real time accident detection module to relieve traffic department operators of the task of patrolling and examining pictures received. Two single-mode optical fibre 2 Mbps double semi-rings transmit data and images from the Command Centres to the Control Centre. Should an entire Command Centre be out of operation, the ring structure reconfigures the network and communicates with the others by an alternative route. (A)
