Abstract

After years of experimentation, the use of digital computer in traffic is becoming more common. This article deals with the theoretical requirements of such systems, and it also describes the physical and programming characteristics of the computer traffic control systems which are operating at several locations in the United States. The improvements in traffic flow and organizational requirements are discussed, and subsequently the probable short-range and long-range directions of new systems are hypothesized.
