Abstract

Along with an increase in the number of vehicles using Metropolitan Expressway in recent years, both the number of traffic accidents and the frequency of congestion occurrences on the expressway have been on the increase. To the Metropolitan Expressway Public Corporation (MEPC), the earlier detection of a traffic impeding incident such as a traffic accident has been an urgent task for preventing any secondary disaster and alleviating traffic congestion. As a measure for such traffic situations, the MEPC has been promoting the introduction of an automatic incident detection system employing image processing technology into its expressway, beginning with the tunnel portion of the expressway's road network. This paper discusses the application of this image system to highway tunnels on the expressway.
