Abstract

The application of rough sets analysis in the activity-based modelling : opportunities and constraints. Rough sets theory has already been successfully applied in several research domains, mainly for pattern recognition. However, up till now, the activity-based approach seems to neglect the rough sets theory in modelling trip choice patterns. Hence, this paper reports on the attempt of introducing the rough sets technique into the activity-based modelling approach. In order to investigate the opportunities and constraints of the rough sets theory in activity-based modelling, we analyse data from a Belgian travel diary survey in the ROSETTA-software.Two case studies are conducted, in which we assess performance of the rough sets in pattern generation, classification and choice prediction. Finally, conclusions are drawn and further challenges are put forward. (Author/publisher)
