Abstract

This paper describes how knowledge management principles and concepts have been applied to the Integrated Road Information System (IRIS) implementation process in order to overcome the potential resistance to change. By creating proper communication channels with the users and involving them in each step of the system's implementation, the users build ownership of the data and increase the transfer of IRIS knowledge across the organisation. Various information dissemination and ownership building techniques such as discussion forums, developing communities of practice for using IRIS as a management tool, using role-playing as prototyping to build processes and the development of an intranet knowledge portal and their success are examined.
