Abstract

The purpose of this technical memorandum is to identify key aspects of the FHWA Work Zone Safety and Mobility Rule (the Rule) and how they might apply to design-build (DB) projects in a different manner than they apply to design-bid-build (DBB) projects. The Rule was originally designed for DBB projects. Because the stakeholders have different roles and responsibilities in the two project delivery methods, some issues can arise when those aspects are applied to DB projects. With the recent popularity of the DB project delivery method, it has become necessary to assess how best to apply the Rule to DB projects and to provide tips, guidance, and other useful information to agencies, contractors, and other stakeholders. The memorandum describes the issues and the effect they have on the application of the Rule. (Author/publisher)
