Abstract

Road Safety is a key issue within the DRIVE programme. Information on accident risk potentials of driving tasks and traffic situations is a major input to the development, evaluation and implementation of safety relevant RTI (Road Transport Informatics) measures. This paper reports on the approach of designing a European proforma for in-depth accident data collection. In-depth accident investigations are means to collect detailed information on factors contributing to accidents via a trained team of experts from different disciplines at the scene of an accident. The ITHACA Project considers the generic approach of looking at all associated factors and phases of accidents. However the emphasis lies on human factors and the pre-crash phase of accident occurrence. A multilevel, modular structure of the specified variables is proposed for a new prototype accident data collection proforma. The prototype proforma is supposed to serve as a basis for the design of a new pan European disaggregate accident data collection proforma.
