Abstract

An overview is given of road safety in Austria. The Austrian road fatality rate is twice as high as those of the countries with the highest safety ratings. A table is given of the number of accidents causing injury on themunicipal road network in Austria in 2003. Reasons why local authorities should enhance efforts to improve traffic safety are outlined. A guide of traffic safety for local authorities has been published and distributed toall local authorities in Austria. A way of setting local targets for improving safety is proposed. Ten 'cornerstones' of local road safety work areidentified: local traffic safety management, data availability, local network of traffic safety, local traffic safety programmes, road-related safety measures, public relations and public awareness, enforcement, educationand further training, encouragement by paradigm, and reductions in the volume of local vehicular traffic.
