Approaches to road safety education in Slovenia.

Abstract

In this paper the most important points in road safety approaches in Slovenia are summarised as follows: (1) Co-ordination of educational efforts of different participants (school, parents, and police), and of different forms (for instance school subjects, public campaign, and research work); (2) Emphasis on safe behaviour in a real situation, and not only on the knowledge of regulations; (3) Emphasis on group work and research projects in higher grades; (4) Combination of permanent and systematic campaigns (for example school road safety education, and traffic badge) with occasional ones stimulated by current problems (such as the use of safety belt and cycle helmet); (5) Awareness that safety education is the responsibility of a civil society; (6) Preparation of booklets with relevant information about different road safety topics; and (7) mass media use in stimulating safe behaviour. Weak points of Slovene educational efforts in road safety are mainly caused by the: (a) Lack of research and relevant institutions on the human road safety aspects; (b) Lack of the evaluation of effects of different activities; (c) Lack of resources for implementation of different safety measures; (d) Lack of a systematic and coherent programme of the future of transport system in Slovenia; and (e) by preoccupation with the economic and political problems of the transition, where road safety is not in the forefront of social interest.
