Abstract

Within the project "commuting accidents" the primary aim was to establish the structure of the circumstances under which this kind of accident occurs. The main investigation includes 2831 casualties in 1971. Only one third of the commuting accidents was by definition road traffic accidents and most of them occurred when the commuter was walking. The impact of risk factors was studied on three levels of analysis: micro, meso and macro level. Most important on the micro level were environmental factors such as ice, snow, holes in the ground, kerbstones and steps followed by accidents initiated by computer faults, other road users and vehicle defects.
