Abstract

In the Federal Republic of Germany, area wide traffic calming measures are considered as an important means to improve traffic safety in residential areas of cities. These measures include speed limits of 30 km /h, one way road networks, modifications of streets like narrowed or staggered lanes, regulation of the parking vehicles etc. The Ruhr University, Bochum, has investigated the effects of these measures on traffic safety. The investigations ar carried out in six cities. Provisional results are presented.
