Abstract

This investigation determined the effect of area- wide traffic quieting measures (Verkehrsberuhigung) realized in Berlin- Charlottenburg on traffic safety. The procedure chosen was an investigation before and after the measures with control group. The "Verkehrsberuhigung" in Charlottenburg resulted in significant reductions in the accident rates. Reconstruction measures in the roads turned out to be more effective than speed limits. Any negative effects by the shifting of traffic into other areas, such as tangent major roads and adjacent areas, were not observed.
