Abstract

"Arena auf Schalke" is one of the newest and most modern multifunctional stadiums in Europe and home of the most famous German soccer team Schalke 04. The Arena has been created as a multifunctional arena, which will host a whole range of events from soccer games to tremendous operas for 57,000 people. It is situated between two highways in the industrial heart of Nordrhein-Westfalen, in the so-called "Ruhrgebiet" (Ruhr Area). There are very good connections with public transport to the Arena, therefore only less than a quarter of the visitors are expected to arrive with their own vehicle. A maximum of 13,200 parking slots are available. A parking guidance system was created with variable route guidance signs, a traffic control system for signalized intersections, variable parking guidance signs, variable signs to permit or restrict the use of turn-offs and lanes and signalized lane control systems. The parking guidance system of the "Arena auf Schalke" is a new generation of very complex and flexible guidance and information systems, which enables traffic peaks to be managed and controlled in addition to normal urban traffic flows. This solution is one of the few applications in Europe, which contains a combination of parking guidance system and dynamic traffic control measures - a very useful and effective application of the integrated aspects of intelligent transport systems.
