Abstract

The accurate monitoring of vehicle movements through intersection and roundabouts has previously been labourious and costly. A video based system, called the ARRB video vehicle detector, has been developed at ARRB to analyse videotapes of traffic scenes, or signals directly from a video camera. Sixteen spot detection points are provided which can be placed anywhere in the video frame. The design provides automatic compensation for changing ambient light. The report describes in detail the design criteria and operation of the video vehicle detector, and includes a section which should enable a novice to become proficient at video analysis using the instrument coupled to a suitable data logger or microcomputer.
