Abstract

Arterial signal synchronization is one of the most cost effective methods for reducing vehicle operating costs and improving traffic flow performance along urban arterials. Arterial signal optimization codes, such as PASSER-II and TRANSYT-7F, have been developed to assist traffic engineers in coordinating traffic signal settings along urban arterials and around networks. The main objective of these programs can be to (1) maximize progression bandwidth, (2) minimize disutility function, or (3) combine these two approaches. This paper concentrates on a comparison study of these options for optimizing signal timings. (A)
