Abstract

ARTISTS (Arterial Streets Towards Sustainability), a European Commission-funded project, aimed to improve the reconstruction of arterial streets inEuropean cities. It is shown that arterial streets do not fit in with thetraditional street classification system. A new classification system is suggested which looks at the network function/link function and urban place function as two independent variables. The use of active stakeholder participation in the reconstruction of arterial streets is considered with reference to six ARTISTS demonstration sites (Malmo, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark; London, UK; Freiburg, Germany; Girona, Spain; Kalamaria, Greece). Stakeholders were engaged to participate in preliminary interviews, focus group discussions, design workshops, and design decision events. It was shown that using these tools, it was possible for the ordinary user of the street to propose draft design solutions. For the covering entry of this conference please see ITRD E132365
