Abstract

An overview of the commercial vehicle research program undertaken by the province of Ontario to improve the highway safety of articulated vehicles is presented. Accident statistics are examined to determine the extent of various causes of accident-vehicle instability, mechanical deficiencies, or others. A pragmatic approach is described, in which experimental results from vehicle tests and theoretical results from computer simulations will be used to predict acceptable performance criteria for a wide variety of conditions.
