Abstract

This Transportation Research Record contains 14 papers on the subject of artificial intelligence and advanced computing applications. Specific topics discussed include a tracking system for the automated inventory of roadway signs, travel time estimation, prediction of annual average daily traffic for nonfreeway facilities, predicting directional design hourly volume, forecasting shared-use vehicle trips, sensor- and image-based technologies for automated pavement condition surveys, representing uncertainty in determining level of service, compressing TransGuide intelligent transportation system data, intersection accident detection, real-time detection of crash-prone conditions, decision support in real-time traffic management, predicting urban arterial travel time, improving decision reliability based on travel time, and a method for speed estimation using single loop detector data. The 2006 series of the Transportation Research Record: Journal of the Transportation Research Board consists of approximately 820 papers selected from 2,800 submissions after rigorous peer review. The peer review for each paper published in this volume was coordinated by the sponsoring committee acknowledged at the end of the text; members of the sponsoring committees for the papers in this volume are listed on page II. Many of these papers were presented at the 85th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in January 2006. (Author/publisher)
