Abstract

The present volume aims at providing an up-to-date view of applications of technologies in the specific domain of traffic control and management. The book presents both the overall methodological context, several of the most advanced applications so far developed and some specific issues and technical aspects which appear to be central for the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-based traffic management systems. The book is organized in three chapters. In the first chapter, four different articles present the general framework of AI applications in road transport and traffic engineering. The second chapter addresses the central tasks of road traffic surveillance and management. The third chapter adresses the area of 'on-board AI', i.e. the development and integration of AI functionalities for in-car driver support devices. The volume is completed with an up-date literature review, collecting together several references to papers concerning the development and application of Artificial Intelligence to transportation.
