Abstract

Asphalt emulsions are not new materials, they have been used for over 80 years to seal roads. In many countries large scale road construction programs have, and are being carried out. These are more often than not with aid or World Bank funds. This investment in road infrastructure has brought with it the challenge of maintaining these roads, particularly in rural and remote areas. This paper discusses the development of maintenance programs around emulsion use. It discusses the various applications and illustrates the simple manufacture of emulsions, formulation considerations and the applications of emulsions in road maintenance. Asphalt emulsions are sophisticated products, however the technology for manufacture and application can be codified and simplified to allow application from simple patching to full scale surfacing projects.
