Abstract

The papers in this volume, which deal with asphalt pavement surfaces and asphalt mixtures, should be of interest to state and local construction, design, materials, and research engineers as well as contractors and material producers. The papers in Part 1 include discussions of pavement smoothness specifications and skidding characteristics. The first four papers in Part 2 were submitted in response to a call for papers for a session at the 75th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board on low-temperature properties of hot-mix asphalt. The next eight are on the influence of volumetric and strength properties on the performance of hot-mix asphalt. In the following three papers, the topics covered are the complex modulus of asphalt concrete, cold in-place asphalt recycling, and polymer modification of asphalt pavements in Ontario. The last two papers were presented in a session on relationship of materials characterization to accelerated pavement performance testing. Many papers listed on the program were not presented at the 75th Annual Meeting because participants who planned to attend could not reach Washington, D.C., as a result of a severe snowstorm in the area. TRB and its volunteer committees are most appreciative of the authors’ interest in participating in the meeting and sincerely regret that so many were unable to do so. All papers contained in this volume have been peer reviewed by the TRB standing committees identified on page ii.
