Abstract

This paper reviews various aspects which influence the selection of the types of surfacings and the materials required, and their design, construction and rehabilitation. Structural Requirements discussed include load dependant characteristics, permeability, and wear resistance Operational requirements discussed include resistance to skidding and aquaplaning, riding quality, and reduction of noise and spray. Characteristics of various dense-graded and open-graded types of asphaltic surfacings are examined. Design methods and some maintenance aspects are briefly reviewed.
