Abstract

Presently, there is no methodology widely accepted by engineers, planners, or bicycle coordinators in the U.S. that will allow them to determine how compatible a roadway is for allowing efficient operation of both bicycles and motor vehicles. Presented in this paper are preliminary results from a Federal Highway Administration research effort to develop a tool to rate the bicycle compatibility of roadways and improve the quality of service for bicyclists.
