Abstract

A principal goal of the PROMETHEUS programme has been to develop new technology to achieve `Unprecented Safety' by helping drivers to avoid accidents, and the PRO-GEN Safety Group has worked towards this goal. This paper summarises the Group's experiences with assessing the safety implications of proposed new Driver Support Systems using current road accident data. This emphasises the importance of considering the likely effects on driving behaviour throughout the design process, and a properly structured programme of Traffic Safety research will be needed to support this.
