Abstract

In advising on the rehabilitation of highways and motorways, use is made of a variety of techniques, such as visual inspection, deflection measurements, and, based on the results of these, calculations of the residual life and the overlay thickness required. Depending on the situation, several types of supplementary information may also be used, such as the results of soil investigations, laboratory examination of pavement materials, etc. This contribution discusses the strategy followed when advising on the rehabilitation of pavements. The main part of the paper deals with the CARE (Computer Applications for Road Engineering) computer program developed by the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division of the Ministry of Transport. This program can be used to interpret the results of falling weight deflectometer tests and is able to predict the residual life of the pavement structure and the overlay thickness, when needed.
