Abstract

This paper has been written with particular reference to relief roads although the methods described are applicable to other forms of improvement. It is not intended to be an exhaustive discussion of the relative merits of differed methods of determining the effect of relief roads. It describes those methods currently used by the Laboratory which are based on studies of the London-Birmingham motorway of Lagos and of Oxford. The estimation of future traffic demand is a complex problem and is dealt with only briefly.
