Abstract

This report gives a summary of the evolution of present standards for testing roadside barriers in connection with the mitigation of human injuries. After a critical review of pertinent literature, a new set of injury criteria is recommended. These criteria are based on the average deceleration and the velocity change up to the instant of secondary impact. The reasonableness of these criteria is assessed.
