Abstract

The report summarises knowledge and experience of reusing and recycling in Sweden and identifies the most important issues to be carried out in order to reach the goals. A modern approach, new and modified analysis, performance-related tests, modified manuals, new technical procedures, economic factors etc. can favour the recycling strategy. This state of the art report presents a review of the current status of recycling for road construction and rehabilitation. Some information has been collected from environmental authorities. This information together with the research and investigations carried out during a long time have identified almost all materials and by-products which are used or could be used in the future. The following road and non-road by-products are described: (1) by-products from crushing plants and mines; (2) recycling of asphalt concrete and reuse of unbound road aggregates; (3) by-products from the metallurgical industry; (4) foundry sand; (5) by-products from incineration plants; (6) building demolished by-products; and (7) scrap tires, waste glass and plastic.
