Abstract

This paper describes the extension of the Athens Metro in Greece. This consists of the extension of Line 3 from Ethniki Amyna Station to Doukissis Plakentias Station and the link to the Eleftherios Venizelos Airport; the Line 2 extension from Sepolia to Peristeri (Thivon); the Line 2 extension to Elliniko and the Line 3 extension from Monastiraki to Egaleo. The challenges to the project included construction in a heavily built up city and the presence of antiquities in the sub-soil. The design of new Metro stations and the characteristics of new rolling stock consisting of 21 fully automatic trains are described. Plans for future extensions to Athens Metro are outlined.
