Abstract

The research presented focused on identifying the elements of a cycle network and of the facilities for bicyclists that are the most attractive for the cyclists. About 1.500 interviews and discussions in smaller groups were undertaken. The resulting criteria's can be regarded as subjective but could be used as a basis for more objective evaluation procedures. Results show that already at a rather low traffic volume main roads are classified as the most unattractive parts of the transport network. The investigation covers different layout of cyclist facilities together with speed of motor vehicles, surface quality, parked cars at roads, pedestrian encounters, junction design, noise, feelings of security and experiences of the surroundings.
