Abstract

Volume 3 of the Australasian Road Safety Handbook aims to provide an up-to-date summary of research and other considerations in regard to the following key topics: 1. Why we continue to under-count the road toll; 2. Improving heavy vehicle safety; 3. The status of hazard perception testing in Australasia; 4. Fleet safety - road safety's next silver bullet?; 5. Local area traffic management schemes-traffic calming; 6. Flexible wire barriers along high-speed roads – a lifesaving opportunity. The overview for each topic generally consists of the following components: 1. a statement of the key road safety issue(s); 2. a description of current practices and policies in Australasian jurisdictions; 3. a summary of the research findings; 4. the identification of the various political, economic and other factors that may influence any official response; 5. a listing of the conclusions to be drawn, all factors considered.
