Abstract

The years since the second world war finished in 1945 have witnessed dramatic development of the Australian road network. From the remedial works of the immediate post war period, through two decades of rapid expansion, the emphasis in latter years has shifted to the national highway system and to managing the road system embracing asset preservation. In extending road networks to serve creeping urban sprawl and providing much needed new highway and freeway facilities to ease congestion in larger cities, much has been achieved.
