Abstract

Mandatory seat belt usage in Australia is discussed and national similarities between Australia and the U.S. are cited, with emphasis on the government role in promoting traffic safety. The legislation is not applied to children under age eight. The penalty for noncompliance was a maximum fine of $20 (Australian). Instances of noncompliance are described, but general support for the law is emphasized.
