Abstract

The Austrian electronic ecopoint system is the first nationwide application of Road Transport Telematic System (RTTS) technology based on the emerging European standards CEN TC 278 for 5.8 GHz microwave Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) links. Utilizing a centralized computer system, a pan-European terminal network, DSRC stations at the borders, the necessary enforcement utilities and DSRC based On Board Equipment (OBE), it monitors the transit traffic through Austria which underlies certain restrictions. It's implementation started in 1996 and the system was put into operation successfully and on schedule by end 1997. This article deals with the system background, functional overview, project implementation and operational issues. (A*)
