Abstract

Roundabouts have been extensively used in Australia. The design and analysis standards for roundabouts have been recently updated for the Australian Road Authorities and AustRoads by the author. This guide is to be published shortly. This paper will cover the manual analysis technique and briefly describes the computer based analytical solutions for determining the capacity and delay at roundabouts. The procedure for estimating the geometric delay and the effect of pedestrians crossings are also discussed. Finally the paper outlines two major changes in this guide on the geometric design of roundabouts. These are the provision of adequate deflection and the second is the geometric design of local street roundabouts. (A)
