Abstract

In 2004 Austroads published Pavement Rehabilitation: A Guide to the Design of Rehabilitation Treatments for Road Pavements. This publication covers the selection and design of pavement rehabilitation procedures, including the design of structural overlays on flexible pavements. This paper discusses the development of the Guide procedures to predict the fatigue life of asphalt overlays from measured surface curvatures (D0-D200) using a simple design chart approach. The procedure is applicable to curvatures measured with a range of devices, FWD, deflectograph and Benkelman Beam. The method is applicable to curvatures measured on pavements which do not contain cemented materials. Due to simplifying assumptions required for the chart-based procedure, the procedure is limited to a maximum overlay thickness of 150 mm and maximum design traffic loading of 107 ESA. This new Austroads procedure is a substantial improvement over the previous procedure as it is more consistent with the design procedures for new pavements and applicable to a wide range of deflection devices.
