Abstract

Case studies of 5 U.S. cities have shown that Auto Restricted Zones (ARZ) concepts are appropriate in a wide range of city sizes and types. The studies have also shown, however, that no one single treatment is appropriate in all situations. ARZ design requires a coordinated effort of traffic engineers, transit operators, urban designers, private interests and government.
