Abstract

Different aspects of a limitation of car use and the social acceptability thereof are studied. Emphasis is laid on the decrease of the negative effects of car use, more than on the decrease of vehicle miles. Furthermore only measures for the short and medium term are studied. After a general description of the situation a summing-up of single measures for the limitation of car use is given. These are then combined with complementary measures, which are considered on their social acceptability. It is concluded that the main choice for a starting point is a policy to get the people used to the decrease of car use. The improvement of public transport; the closure of intensively used town centres; the restraining of traffic in residential areas; the influencing of commuting traffic; car pooling; car-free sundays and the increase of motoring costs are discussed.
