Abstract

Typical advanced toll collection systems that combine Automated Vehicle Classification (AVC) with multiple payment methods are described, including pilot applications in two toll plazas in Greece, which plans to install comprehensive advanced tolling systems on 132 toll lanes. Comparisons of manual and automated tolling are made based on measurements at 10 toll plazas with and without lane processors and automatic vehicle pre-classification. It was found that potential system management gains, reduction of fraud and violations, and the convenience of multiple payment methods are accompanied by elongated service rates. (A*)
