Abstract

This paper briefly describes the concept of automatic incident detection (DAI) using "picture analysis". The method consists of using powerful computers to analyse pictures of traffic sent in by television cameras placed along the motorway. The experiments used to validate the accuracy of the equipment are also described briefly. This includes the following experiments: 1) the ESCOTA Company network traffic experiment on an urban section of the A8 motorway, where traffic varies from 30,000 - 110,000 vehicles per day; 2) the full scale test carried out by the AREA Company on an urban section of the A43 motorway carrying dense city traffic (110,000 vehicles per day), with daily peaks; 3) the COFIROUTE Company experiment carried out at Tours, which covered many difficult intersections; and 4) the current experiment testing the use of the system in tunnels.
