Abstract

The initial phases of a serc research project to develop algorithms suitable for signal- controlled urban road networks are described. Algorithms hitherto have been based on queue detection. The detection of shockwaves through the identification of abnormally large changes in parameters like speed and flow, or on individual car- following and vehicle accounting models. For reasons given in the paper, none of these approaches are suitable for urban road networks.
