The Societe des Autoroutes PARIS-RHIN-RHONE (SAPRR), a French motorway company, which operates a network covering nearly 1600 km of toll motorways, has given priority to safety and quality of service. The implementation of the "Speed Observatory" will enable the SAPRR to study driver behaviour and associated risk factors. This tool mainly focuses on speed and inter-vehicle distances analyses which appear to be significant factors in the risk of serious accident. The first results confirm the high percentage of light vehicles driving in a risky situation (excessive speed and/or short inter-vehicle distances) and the potential of the tool for in-depth studies.
