Abstract

This chapter describes the ongoing research being performed to develop an acceptable pan-European system for automatic debiting. The objectives of the PAMELA (Pricing And Monitoring Electronically of Automobiles) project are presented, and an outline of the PAMELA system presented. The results of the recent small-scale evaluation trials performed with the system for three different automatic debiting applications are described. These are: a) the Paris-Normandie Autoroute; b) Car parking and debiting in Lisbon; and c) Multilane experiments in Sweden. The continuing development and the most recent test installations of the PAMELA technology are also described in the context of the ADEPT project.
