Abstract

This paper describes the electronic method of toll collection known as AVI (Automatic Vehicle Identification) introduced at the Dartford River Crossing in 1992. Details are given of the AVI detection equipment, tag and status lights and of the financial agreements undertaken with the Dartford River Crossing company. The results of a study carried out by Mott McDonald into the use of the system are described. Figures are presented for the number and type of vehicle using AVI and their frequency of use. The effect on throughput at the toll collection point and financial aspects are discussed. It is concluded that AVI is popular with frequent users, in particular goods vehicle operators. Toll system capacity is increased by 1% for every 2% of AVI-equipped vehicles.
