Automobile fuel consumption estimates : ECE and EPA versus "real world".

Abstract

The relative merits of ECE (European) and EPA (American) procedures of estimating automobile fuel consumption are discussed. In spite of some indifference found in 1983 by two Canadian experts, the author points out that ECE procedures have since then lost significance, producing now figures much too low when compared to the values actually perceived by common drivers. It appears therefore recommendable that: (I) ECE constant- speed routines give way to EPA highway cycle procedure, and (II) the ECE urban cycle be modified to include a cold- start specification.
