Automobile hood and fender design for pedestrian safety.

Abstract

This paper presents and discusses procedures for automobile hood design to reduce head injury of pedestrians struck by the front of the vehicle. Fender seam designs are presented which reduce the Head Injury Criteria (HIC) by over 50 percent. The procedures and analysis are conducted using DYNA3D (a nonlinear dynamic finite element program), I-DEAS (computer graphics finite element software), and a Cray YMP/832 supercomputer for a Ford Taurus hood/fender and hood/cowl.
