Abstract

THIS REPORT PRESENTS A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF NECK INJURY MECHANISMS IN FRONTAL COLLISIONS IN THE US AND IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY. THE EFFECT OF SEX AND AGE ON NECK INJURY IS INVESTIGATED TOGETHER WITH THE ROLE OF DELTA V IN NECK INJURY. THE DISTRIBUTION OF VEHICLE CONTACT AREAS FOR HEAD AND NECK IMPACTS CAUSING NECK INJURIES IS ILLUSTRATED. ONE OF THE PARAMETERS STUDIED WAS THE EFFECTS OF RESTRAINT SYSTEMS ON NECK INJURY OCCURRENCE. A STATISTICAL STUDY OF US AND GERMAN FILES SHOWS THAT A MAJOR CAUSE OF CRITICAL AND FATAL NECK INJURIES IN FRONTAL COLLISIONS IS HEAD IMPACT WITH THE INTERIOR SURFACES OF THE VEHICLE.
